Our department’s size is just right for those who want a law enforcement career with many different opportunities. The department is small enough that officers have the chance to work in numerous specialty units, but large enough to have all the best equipment, services, and technology.
Officers are eligible to apply for specialized units and teams after their first year. These teams include Street Crimes, Violent Crimes, School Resource Officers, K9 Unit, Strategic Intelligence Unit, Vice/Narcotics and many others.

Salary
The City of High Point strives to provide the most competitive compensation and benefits for our officers. Starting salaries vary based on an applicant’s prior experience, education, and training.
Applicants who are not currently sworn may be hired as Police Officer Recruits. Police Officer Recruits receive a full salary while attending Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET).
The current minimum base salary for police recruits starts at $55,467.36 before incentives are added for education (up to 10%), military or previous experience (up to 10%), language proficiency (up to 5%), and probationary salary increases during the first 12 months of employment (4.5%).
The salary for Lateral Officers ranges from $56,022.72 to $67,111.36.

Several of our officers are certified in specialties such as Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), Peer Support, Drug Recognition Expert, State Certified Instructor, Specialized Instructor (Firearms, Protective Tactics, Driving, Physical Fitness, Hazmat). New hires will be provided with opportunities for this training and more once they join the department.

The department’s take home vehicle policy allows sworn officers living in Guilford, Davidson, Forsyth and Randolph counties to drive their cars home. The department also provides uniforms and equipment, and many opportunities for training.
